Among the charms of Mexico are the formal phrases of traditional greeting and hospitality. A very old school phrase is used to welcome a visitor to one’s home: ‘aquí tiene su casa’ or ‘está usted en su casa’, best translated as ‘my home is yours,’ or more simply ‘welcome.’
The new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio prides himself on being a bilingual speaker of Spanish and English, but it seems that he has yet to acquire the elegant and welcoming formality of Mexican Spanish. In a newspaper report today about the arrest by ICE of travellers from Germany and Canada, Secretary Rubio is quoted as saying:
‘If you’re not coming to the United States to joins a Hamas protest, or to come here and tell us about how right Hamas is, or … stir up conflict on our campuses and cause riots in our streets and vandalise our universities, then you have nothing to worry about.’
In other words, ‘Welcome to the United States’ Rubio style.
Among those apparently deemed unwelcome by Secretary Rubio’s United States, according to the article are:
· Charlotte Pohl and Maria Lepere, German teenagers handcuffed, strip-searched, body-scanned, dressed in prison uniform and detained for a night, because they had not arranged a place to stay before they arrived in Hawaii.
· Another German citizen, Lucas Sielaff who tried to cross the border from Mexico with his US citizen fiancée, detained for 16 days.
· A Canadian actress Jasmine Mooney detained for 12 days.
I wonder just what they did to disobey Secretary Rubio’s requirements.
I sorely miss my American friends and the many wonderful places I have visited over more than 40 years living and doing business in the United States, but I begin to wonder whether I might be on Mr Rubio’s list of undesirables.
Mientras tanto, a mis muy queridos amigos estadounidenses les doy la más cordial bienvenida y les aseguro que aquí en Sunninghill tienen su casa: Meanwhile, I offer the most cordial welcome to my American friends and that you are most welcome in my home in Sunninghill.
Whose greeting to you prefer?
