For many years a wheelbarrow race to raise money for the
local Day Centre for our elder residents (which now includes me!) and the
Rotary Club has taken place on New Year’s Day. The contestants gather in the
car park in our street and race past our house on a course around the centre of
the village. The race started originally as a humorous contest between drinkers
at the local pubs (stopping at each pub for a pint) and over time became a way to raise money for community
causes. The pandemic caused the last two races to be cancelled, but the event
was revived today. Eighteen teams competed for the prizes: fastest men’s team,
fastest ladies’ team, fastest mixed team, best fancy dress, best junior fancy
dress, most sponsorship money raised. There is also a raffle and an auction. A
friend who manages the money on the day told me that the race usually raises £30,000.
